Cyanobacteria (237)

Cyanobacteria (237)

Product Information

Cyanobacteria (237)

Cyanobacteria is an example of a very early form of life, a Pre Cambrian Blue/Green Algae from around 653 million years ago that has been preserved as an oncoid
. The specimen displays darker spheres, these are the bacteria. In life the bacteria lived as clusters of filaments that were fixed to the substrata of an intra tidal marine enviroment. Occasionally there were storms that disarticulated the bacteria and rolled fragments into  small spheroid structures which picked up coatings of lime rich mud to form Oncoids.
Cyanobacteria still exxist today and can tolerate very extreme conditions.
This specimen has a polished face to enhance the detail of the cyanobacteria and comes from the Isle of Islay in the Western Isles, Scotland.
