Libyan Desert Glass is a natural glass composed of nearly pure silica (98 wt %). This glass has an unusual composition and has for a long time been considered as mysterious. Chemical analyses have shown that the glass is locally enriched in meteoritic elements, in typical chondritic proportions. The main explanation for this is that Libyan Desert Glass results from a meteorite impact on a silica-rich target.
