Moldavite (842)
Moldavite is believed to be a Tecktite, the chemical composition varies but is mainly silica glass containing impurities of magnesium, iron and other elements. tecktites are still not really understood, they have no crystal structure, and are very similar to obsidian, but are not associated with any volcanic process. The leading theory is that they are the result of a meteor fusing with rocks upon impact and flung out back into space, they then return to Earth burning up on re-entry. Moldavite is only found in one location,a "splash field" centered around Moldavia in former Czechoslovakia and is believed to have originated from a meteorite crater in Germany.
This is a beautiful large specimen weighing in at 14 grams.
